Proud History
Fireboat Locations
(1976-1991)
Between 1966 and 1976 the City imposed budget cuts on FDNY and the Marine Division was substantially and critically weakened. The reductions were the worst ever when five of the nine Marine Companies, over half, were disbanded.
By the late 1970s, there was a considerable decrease in fires throughout the city, including along the waterfront. Simultaneously, the growth in pleasure boating and changes in port use dictated that FDNY also respond to water rescues and assorted non-fire emergencies.
For most of this history, there was nowhere in the developed port any great distance from a fireboat station. With the fleet now pared down to four boats, some people believed that the use of smaller, faster, though less powerful, fireboats would be an acceptable solution.
