Fireboat Locations
(1992 - Present)
More influential to fireboat coverage than the failure of the SES boats was FDNY's 1991 decision to disband Marine Co. 2. This reduced the fleet to three Marine Companies, below what many experts considered the bare minimum. Any proposed berth locations for only three fireboats would be a poor strategic arrangement.

Marine 2 was Harvey's longtime home, and though the station was closed she continued in regular service for a few more years substituting for other boats.
Landmark Pier A constructed in 1886 was always a City pier, built for the Department of Docks. Many people considered this the most famous fireboat station anywhere, but it was only used by FDNY for a little over 30 years.
Soon after the closure of Marine 2, it was apparent that if Marine 1 was to vacate Pier A, there would be no fireboat protection left on the North River. In 1992, FDNY reconsidered coverage and moved Marine 1 upriver to Pier 53, the former berth of Marine 2.
New quarters were being prepared in the Navy Yard. In 1992 Marine 6 was moved there from their Grand Street berth. The Marine Division Headquarters and Marine Repair Shops also moved to the Navy Yard from Pier A.
Fireboats currently in use are John D. McKean at Marine 1, Kevin C. Kane at Marine 6, and Fire Fighter at Marine 9. Reserve fireboat Governor Alfred E. Smith and the fireboat tender Smoke II are maintained at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Minor variations occur, locations shown are typical.
