John J. Harvey Restoration Project
 | | | |
Attention Heroic Volunteers on the People's Fireboat John J. Harvey:
John J. Harvey has completed a year-and-a half of vital restoration work, including: major repairs to our propulsion, wheels, cutlass bearings, aft bulkhead and other vital systems, most recently at Staten Island's Caddell Drydock and Repair Company, the region's most prestigious yard. The company did this work at a generous discount, enabling us to be underway for the 2008 season!
Harvey is starting her latest season providing public access to New York State's waters! Activities include free public trips for school children, educational trips, water displays for public events such as Independence Day, welcoming ships to harbor, and other celebrations of our waterfront and its history.
Please consider a contribution to John J. Harvey. As a thank-you for your support at this crucial moment, donations over $500 will receive a framed 11" x 16" photograph of a piece of the John J. Harvey. Don't delay. Your contribution is greatly needed and appreciated.
On behalf of Save Our Ships New York and all our volunteers and friends, and in anticipation of our best season ever, thank you in advance for your generous donation.

"You want to be sitting at a dinner party and say, 'I work with the John J. Harvey,' and people say, 'Yeah, I just read about that thing.' " - The New York Times

Bernadette Castro, NYS Commissioner of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced a $320,000 historic preservation matching funds grant for our ongoing restoration.
We must raise the money and perform repairs first before any NYS grant funds will be released.
A few great ways to SUPPORT THE FIREBOAT !

You can make a difference
|
» Tax-deductible cash donations - 100% of your financial contributions go toward restoring the hull, propulsion and other infrastructure projects. The grant makes your support worth double to us.
Even kids are lending a hand.
» Donate supplies/equipment/tools - We need steel, welding rods, Rust-o-leum paint (gallons), rollers, brushes, masks, gloves for painting and other repairs. Given our limited storage, please contact us regarding more substantial tool donations. These count toward the grant match too. » See our full wish list
» Volunteer your skilled labor - We need experienced welders, mechanics, lawyers, accountants... motivated people who take pride in a job well done. We will train where necessary. Labor donations count toward the grant too and are essential to our efforts.
» Buy a genuine Harvey T-Shirt. - These are available from our online shop, or on board the boat.

" A fireboat that pumped water to firefighters for 80 hours at the World Trade Center during and after Sept. 11, and became the focus of a children's book, is now itself in need of help. "
