Job Posting: Development Director (posted 2/21/07)

Save Our Ships New York seeks part-time Development Director for new position. Proven fundraiser with excellent financial track record and communication skills sought to manage ongoing capital giving campaign for five-year-old New York City not-for-profit. Applicants must be self-starters, excited about the opportunity to shape a new position, and comfortable working with a diverse constituency of volunteers. Excellent fundraising skills are essential, as is a passion for New York's waterways, their history, and maritime preservation projects. Love for old fireboats a plus. Qualified applicants should send letter of interest, résumé, and salary requirements to resume@fireboat.org.

DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION

Save Our Ships New York is a non-profit organization promoting interest in and support for maritime history and the revival of New York waterways. The organization operates the 1931 retired New York City Fireboat John J. Harvey, which offers free public educational trips on the Hudson River and throughout New York Harbor.

The Development Director will be the organization's first paid staff member. This newly established, part-time, work-from-home position is ideal for a self-starting candidate who loves asking for money, enjoys being part of a diverse team of dedicated, quirky individuals, and thrives in a job that demands independence, ingenuity, diligent follow-through, and effective networking with sponsors and potential donors. Candidates must have a take-charge attitude, stellar organizational skills, and the motivation to identify, pursue, and secure funding from new and existing sources, including foundations, corporations, organizations and individuals.

For the past five years, Save Our Ships New York has established itself as a successful and compelling community project that has touched the lives of a diversity of people in New York City and throughout the Hudson River Valley. Until now, the organization has been run solely by volunteers. Yet even without the advantage of a professional staff, we've managed to raise over $340,000 dollars in grants and donations. The right candidate will continue our grassroots fundraising efforts and help raise the organization's profile among major donors and grant-making organizations.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Manage capital campaign - Save Our Ships New York has received a New York State Historic Preservation matching grant in the amount of $320,000. A significant percent of the match needs to be raised by Summer 2009.

  • Plan and implement development - Identify and develop new major donor sources and cultivate new board members

  • Act as principal organizational spokesperson - Must be articulate, with strong writing and editing skills, with an appreciation of history and an interest in the role of historic vessels and New York's waterways in the development of the city, state, and nation.

  • Organize development of communications materials - Work with board members to establish a consistent message in printed materials and on our web site.
