16 August 2004NYC fireboat John J. Harvey still strutting her stuff at 73 by Bob Mitchell HUDSON -- With dollar signs attached to most everything in life, it is nice to know you can occasionally experience life as a nabob, for free. For example, this past Sunday Hudsonians could cruise the Hudson River like a genuine yacht-owner without it costing one thin dime. No one would confuse the historic fireboat John J. Harvey with a fancy yacht, nor sailing on her the same as ownership, still, anybody who showed up at the St. Lawrence Cement Co. dock that afternoon could pass a pleasant hour on the river courtesy of Save Our Ships New York, a not-for-profit that operates the grand old lady. She has been cruising the Hudson River for about two weeks -- her fourth annual jaunt up the river -- and on Sunday was in town. Today, she is heading for Troy. The 3 p.m. cruise on Sunday was pretty well packed with youngsters and oldsters alike. Before casting off, the skipper announced over the loudspeaker that owners of cars parked along the dock should make sure their windows were closed. Thinking he meant the day's leaden skies might open up in the next hour, eyes drifted skyward. But no, the fireboat's pumps would be operational when approaching the dock, he announced. So, look out!
