AREA OFFICIALS WELCOME HISTORIC FIREBOAT JOHN J. HARVEY TO KINGSTON ON AUGUST 13
Area public officials will greet the historic 1931 Fireboat John J. Harvey at 11 a.m. PRESS CONFERENCE on Friday, August 13, at Kingston's Rondout Waterfront (Broadway and East Strand). The boat is open for inspection 11 a.m.-noon. The public is also invited for short trip to nearby Feeney's Boatyard at noon. "The fact that the Harvey helped with rescue efforts after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack and that fact that it is on the National Register of Historic Places, make the Harvey a significant part of New York State's maritime history," City of Kingston Mayor James M. Sottile said. "We are proud to welcome the Harvey to Kingston, once again."
The Kingston stop is part of the Harvey's Fourth Annual August 11-23 Blue Links Tour from Manhattan to Albany to demonstrate the value of piers, docks and vessel landings along the River. In conjunction with Save Our Ships New York ,The Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance (MWA), and North River Historic Ship Society, the Harvey' s Hudson River tour plans to attention to the waterfront infrastructure. Save Our Ships New York is a state-charted not-for-profit organization that oversees the fireboat through a permanent preservation easement. The MWA works through education, grassroots organization and media advocacy to include the public's voice and values in the decision making about the future of our waterfront and waterways. Background
The John J. Harvey was built in 1931 for FDNY. Rescued from scrap dealers in 1999, preservationists and volunteers brough the fireboat back to life. In 200, the boat was added to the National Register of Historic Places and will soon have a National Historic Landmark designation. She was named Ship of the Year in 2001 by the Steamship Historical Society of America for her service during the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center attacks.
Ongoing Plans
On May 15, 2004, Bernadette Castro, New York State Commissioner of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, announced a $320,000 historic preservation matching funds grant for restoration and preservation of the Harvey. The Harvey's ongoing matching fund-raising campaign welcomes contributions.
"I am pleased to join with Kingston Mayor James Sottile and my colleagues along the river to salute the Harvey and the good work that it does," Tivoli Mayor Marcus J. Molinaro said. Sottile added that he was pleased with the show of support and hoped people would take advantage of the public inspections and /or trips for an appreciation of the Harvey's significance.
