Restoration Engine room :: Wheelhouse :: On deck :: Hull :: Other :: Volunteering The first major accomplishment in the engine room was start up. When the Harvey owners bought the boat, they were told by FDNY that only some of the five engines ran. Chief Engineer Tim Ivory started on the number two engine first. After rebuilding the water pump and ensuring oil was flowing, Ivory put air pressure to it and she fired right up. Then it was on to number three, which fired up right away. Because of a governor malfunction, the number five engine couldn't maintain oil pressure. Swapping out the governor corrected the problem. The fuel rack on engine number one had seized, but a few swift whacks with a hammer freed it up. Once all the engines were running, Ivory took time to dry out the electric system to avoid the short circuits and minor explosions that can result from moisture in DC equipment. Heat produced by short circuiting the generators at low speed and applying some small field voltage did the trick. In August of 1999, owner Chase Welles asked Ivory, "When can we go for a ride?" Ivory's reply was, "Do we have running lights?" The rest is history.
