Welcoming The New Fireboat Three Forty Three

In 1931, John J. Harvey was the largest most sophisticated fireboat in the world. On 30 April, FDNY's eagerly awaited new fireboat Three Forty Three, the largest and most sophisticated in the world, arrived in New York harbor for the first time.

John J. Harvey departed pier 66 at about 16:00 for the Statue of Liberty where we met up with other fireboats including John D. McKean, Firefighter and several New Jersey boats stationed further south. Three Forty Three was completing the voyage from Panama City, Florida where she was built and launched. Some eight fireboats doing water displays simultaneously has not been seen in decades, and was a rare sight!

On signal, all boats stopped water as Three Forty Three started up her bow pipe and was escorted to the World Trade Center site where a wreath was dropped in honor of the 343 firefighters who died there on 11 September 2001.

Three Forty Three is berthed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard undergoing further outfitting, training and trials pending going into service as Marine One, replacing John D. McKean at Pier 40 in the North River. A sister boat, Firefighter II, will arrive later this year to, we trust, a similar welcome.

Celebrate One Thousand Plus Days Before The Mast
John J. Harvey is not an off-shore vessel; Long Island Sound is about as far from shore as we get. Schooner Anne, a seventy foot long gaff-rigged schooner, may be the most off-shore vessel. Ever. Anywhere. In history.

Anne departed New York on 21 April 2007 with owner-builder Reid Stowe and partner Soanya Ahmad on board aiming for the longest sea voyage in history -- 1000 days non-stop at sea. She surpassing the previous record of 657 days on 6 February 2009, surpassed 1,000 days at sea on 16 January, 2010 and is still at sea! The trip has not been without adventure, including a collision with a container ship, many storms, a knock-down from a rogue wave, and the return of Reid's by-then-pregnant partner Soanya Ahmad to land. Nevertheless, Reid endures and Anne has broken five world records during this voyage.

Stowe plan to return to New York's North River Pier 81 on 17 June when he will be greeted by John J. Harvey and a flotilla of vessels being organized by John Doswell. Join us on this free public trip. See the web-site calendar for details. Read more about Reid and Anne at

Wisdom And Insight From Da Bosun's Chair

22 May marked the 1st annual, monthly Vol'n Crew Breakfast on Deck & Greasy Work Detail. Capt. John Doswell fired up "Chernobyl" our venerable aft deck grill and rustled up a great breakfast for 20 of our most loyal HarVols and crew. We stuffed ourselves, loitered away most of the morning spinning salty yarns, and got down to the greasy work as the sun passed the yardarm.

Many new HarVol faces welcomed on deck this season, including folks with actual welding and metal working skills. Believe it or not, one has initiated grant writing program for the ship, as well as showing up with a basket of fresh baked cookies, early, on each Vol day... hats off to you Renee Stanley.

Rust never sleeps. Nor do our HarVols a couple Saturdays a month. We continue attacking rust blossoms on the deckhouse, and are starting work on those crumbly black cap rails. John Browne has the engine room looking sparkly with help from his troglodyte Vol engine room squad.

First Time Ham Radio Event on Harvey
On Saturday 5 June, John J. Harvey will for the first time join nearly 70 other museum ships from around the world for ‘Museum Ships On the Air.’ This is a ‘Ham’ radio event where radio operators from around the globe reach out to make contact with radio stations set up on the historic ships, and compete to get the most contacts. Courtesy of John Keirnan and his radio group, special event station KE2UN will be operating from 10:00 to 18:00 hrs. from the pilot house of Harvey.

For more information about the event, and to see the other prestigious vessels taking part, go to www.nj2bb.org.
LeRoy Banks Attaway Jr.

Roy Attaway, a Trustee of SOSNY since it was founded, died suddenly on 9 May 2010.

A child of the South Carolina Low Country, Roy was on boats before he could walk. He was a reporter and editor in Beaufort SC and Charleston SC until moved to New York City where he was Editor-in-Chief of Boating, Yachting and Motorboating and Sailing magazines, and a producer and writer for ABC's The American Sportsman. He contributed articles to many national journals including the New York Times, and was the author of a memoir of his childhood titled A Home in the Tall Marsh Grass, published by Lyons Press. His award-winning photography was shown in galleries in New York and elsewhere and often accompanied his writings. He was also the editor of this e-newsletter however briefly.

To the joy of friends and family, Roy was a consummate amateur chef and avid fisherman. When he and his wife Robyn Gill moved to Kansas City in 2001, he desperately missed the both the sea and all the delicious fish in it. In a wonderful and rare combination, he had the soul of the true sportsman and the perception of the real artist. He was a quietly dedicated supporter of our project, and he will be missed.
