The John J. Harvey Fireboat gained fame for her heroic efforts in response to the September 11th attacks. After joining volunteer tugs and ferries evacuating a trapped crowd of 150, the John J. Harvey was commandeered into official service when FDNY boats, with our assistance were asked to pump water at the Word Trade Center site, providing the only water available on site.
The New York Post Office is hosting the event in conjunction with offering the special postmark in honor of the John J. Harvey crew and her service to New York City.

HAMMING IT UP ON THE HARVEY
|
On Saturday 5 June 9, 2010 a HAM radio event called the Museum Ship Weekend was held on dozens of historic ships and boats around the country and world. Thanks to a suggestion from Harvey volunteer Renee Stanley, John J. Harvey and the volunteer efforts of organizer John Kiernan (KE2UN), we participated from about 08:00 to about 17:00. During that period we logged 159 contacts. In addition to John, our operators were old John J. Harvey friend Kelly Plazzi (KC2SKL) and David Rosner (WA2MZZ).
We will receive QSL cards (a record of contact) and will send special John J Harvey QSL cards out to all who we touched base with. The operators had a great time - and have spread the word about our famous fireboat worldwide in a unique and fun way.
