Get Onboard with July Events and Info
4th of July Fireworks Party Benefits John J. Harvey

Once again Macy's Independence Day fireworks are in the North (Hudson) River, and our Pier 66 (West 26th Street) is the best possible vantage point!

For $200 per person you get exclusive rooftop table seating, an open bar and buffet. $150 of that amount is deductible and supports historic vessels, including Harvey. The venue will be open from 19:00 to 22:30 pm; fireworks start at 21:20.

NYC security requires identification for access to the pier, so tickets must be bought in advance. Contact
http://www.nrhss.org for more info.
Harvey Visits Upstate With Teaching The Hudson Valley Grant

Kingston, NY was host to Harvey and two days of educational programming for local schools thanks to money raised by students at the Rondout Valley School District this past winter.

A curriculum organized by Captain Ann Loeding included FDNY Captain Tommy Whyte (Ret) speaking about fireboats' role both in general and at the World Trade Center in September 2001, Engineer John Browne showing off our unique engine room, and Captain Bob Lenney relating experiences from his 47 years at the helm.

The trip upstate was made possible with a grant from Teaching the Hudson Valley. Interested schools should contact Ann Loeding at

A Day In The Life Of The HarVols

On Saturday morning 26 June at 10:00 (or so) as the dock was being cleared of the remnants of the partying from the night before, an intrepid band of HarVols showed up to begin the latest round of projects to keep our beloved Fireboat looking shipshape.

They scraped and blasted and sloshed and stirred and slurped and painted and prodded and whatever. They smiled and laughed and sweated and joked. We thank them for their spirit and enterprise. We thank them for rising sort of early on a Saturday morning when they could have been at the park, or at the beach, or at home with family.

To those of you who missed this delightful way to start the day, we look forward to seeing you next HarVol Day.

Please check with our webpage schedule for the latest information on Volunteer Days.

Come On In... The Crew's Shop Is Open

After speaking to Barbara Moore, the Curator of our fabulous Crew's Shop, I came away with the following insights.

• You can purchase CREW T-Shirts and copies of Jessica DuLong's wonderful book "My River Chronicles" on line http://fireboat.org/shop.asp
• Step on board and a must-have wonderland of John J. Harvey items are yours.

- Fireboat, a delightfully illustrated children's book about the Fireboat John J. Harvey by Maira Kalman
- Really neat JJH Baseball Caps in a myriad of colors. (3)
- Sloshy, Slidey, Float Pens with a scale model of the JJH inside
- Tempting, Tantalizing, Temporary Tattoos
- Puzzling Fireboat Puzzles
- Fantastic, Folding Fireboat Logo Umbrellas to keep you from getting soaked by un-fireboat water.
- Genuine 1954 New York City Maps so you can find where that great restaurant you loved used to be.

From time to time, Barbara adds new items to tempt a few shillings from your pocket. The proceeds from the sale of these fabulous items go to keeping our beloved Fireboat afloat and operating smoothly. So come on board and come away with something that will add to the joy of your trip and the well being of the JJH.

Thanks Barbara!
In Memoriam... Tobias Wong

Tobias "Tobi" Wong, Harvey volunteer of many years, died at the age of 35 on Sunday 30 May.

Tobi contributed a great deal of time working with his friend Barbara Moore in the ship's store and various other chores - many quite thankless - both on-board and off. This very sweet man was extremely talented to boot. Harvey joins the ranks of the many who will miss him.

New York Times story

DaBosun's Buzz

Genial landlord and project founder John Krevey has tasked his expert steel working crew with creating improved safety line stanchions along the cap rail. Thirty two stanchions supporting a safety cable or line will protect the perimeter of the boat.

Next is a welded, steel frame picnic gazebo on the aft deck (so that the infirm and timid will be shielded from deadly solar flares and those pesky stray neutrinos.)

Chief Welder Shafiq continues patching of our deteriorated aft red stacks as well.

Post Office Honors John J. Harvey With Special Stamp

At a special ceremony at Pier 66, John J. Harvey was honored with an unveiling of a new postage stamp that features an image of the Fireboat spraying water.

John Doswell, Executive Director of SOSNY, Raschelle Parker, Manager of Marketing for the New York District of the Postal Service, and Bernard Ente - the photographer who took the photo that inspired the stamp attended. In addition, special guest Battalion Chief Michael Buckheit from FDNY Marine Operations recalled the history of the Fireboat and the need to "never forget" the firefighters who lost their lives at the World Trade Center on 9/11.

The event, which was attended by a number of fireboat fans as well as many others, was followed by an open house on the boat. Captain Bob Lenney, former FDNY pilot who ran the boat for many years was also there.
