FDNY Fireboat To Visit Cold Spring Aug. 6
Free tours and a ride will be available
As part of its annual trip up the Hudson, the MV John J. Harvey will be docking in Cold Spring on Tuesday, August 6 at the Downey Oil Depot just south of the Dock along the Hudson.
The boat is scheduled to arrive at the dock at 5 pm and will be open to the public for a tour until 6:30 pm. The boat will overnight in Cold Spring and depart the next day to continue the trip up the Hudson to Troy.
Built in 1931, MV John J. Harvey, at 130 ft and 268 net tons, is among the most powerful fireboats ever in service. She has five 600 HP diesel engines, and has capacity to pump 18,000 gallons of water a minute. Her pumps are powerful — enough so that when she and the George Washington Bridge were both brand new, she shot water over the bridge’s roadway. She was retired by the New York City Fire Department in 1994 and bought at auction by her current owners in 1999. She was placed on The National Register of Historic Places in June 2000.
At the FDNY’s request, Harvey was brought out of retirement to serve from September 11-14 2001.
