Historic Fireboat John J Harvey, To Give Cold Spring Salute At Memorial Service For Missing FDNY Firefighter
John J Harvey, "The most powerful Fireboat when underway" in the United States, and now a private working Fireboat Museum, will be traveling to Cold Spring on Saturday October 13th. The purpose of the trip is give a water display salute at a memorial service for a missing FDNY firefighter just north of Cold Spring. The boat will also be stopping at the Oil Depot in Cold Spring from 11am to 2pm to give public tours and trips.
The boat will be stopping at Cold Spring is to increase awareness of Historic Boats on the Hudson "says Huntley Gill, one of the owners and also chairman of the North River Historic Ship Society, a not for profit group. "These boats and ships have played such an important part in the creation and growth of New York City and the Hudson, it is important that they are preserved and that people appreciate their historic importance in the growth of the region and also how useful they can be in times of crisis. We also educate the public on the history of Marine Firefighting. Large Fireboats are such wonderful vessels, children of all ages, even 60 year old children, are fascinated by them. Harvey has probably the most beautiful Stern of all the New York City boats and to watch one of Harvey's water displays is truly awesome. Harvey Pumps 18,000 gallons of water a minute. That is the same as an average home swimming pool every 10 seconds, the same as 18 normal fire engines."
The guided tours are a great way for people to learn about how boats were built 70 years ago and to learn many of the principles of simple mechanics that are easy to see in use throughout the boat.
Further information about the boat can be found on their website at www.fireboat.org
